I have travelled worldwide and I never loved a hotel so much. Chris and Adriana were fantastic hosts, helped with our every need and welcomed us back when our second hotel in Rio was a disaster. The place is spotlessly clean, the views are outstanding and the peace and calm of the place was exactly what you want on holiday - just the perfect base for a trip to Rio. The highlight is the breakfast - a phenomenal selection of fruits, breads, meats, cheeses, pastries, homemade juices, cakes, all in the setting of a view overlooking the sea with hummingbirds fluttering around the garden. Heaven! We had a late departure flight from Rio, and even after check out we were welcome to relax in the property, and were able to shower and refresh while they organised our transport for us. In our first stay, we had the room with a pool view on the ground floor which was gorgeous. On the second stay we had a twin room with shared bathroom which was just as perfect, the shared bathroom was cleaned very regularly and with multiple bathrooms we were never waiting for a shower. I can't rate Gerthrudes any more highly.
If I had to say anything, it would be that the cost for checking in past 9pm was a little steep considering we arrived before 9.30. But policy is policy and for the value of the stay I didn't mind!

We loved this hotel and it thoroughly deserves its high rating. The host is wonderful, the bed is very comfortable, the shower is modern and has great pressure, the neighborhood is historic and quiet, and the view is gorgeous.
The wifi in the room downstairs was good enough to take meetings, but it got slower in the evening. The light in the bedroom was quite dim. Although the neighborhood was very quiet, a beautiful yellow bird woke us up at 4am with loud screeching - not the hotel's fault, just beware.

Everything about this place is phenomenal. The attention to detail when it comes to the dcor, the property is run like a well oiled beautiful vintage classic top tier machine. The views are gorgeous, the breakfast delicious and the care by Adriaana (pardon my spelling) and Christopher is exceptional. I loved everything about this property right down to the meticulous choice is mirrors.

Chris was helpful on every count except the exorbitant charge levied for our bus being delayed.
We had been informed about the late check-in fee before we arrived and thus planned our arrival into Rio accordingly so that we wouldn't be throwing money away. Unfortunately, our transport into Rio was delayed twice. We were in constant communications with the property through the afternoon to let them know, and despite them saying 'No problem, don't worry.', they still charged us the late check in fee. I mean this accommodation is very highly priced as it is, so we were, frankly, appalled. We questioned Chris as to why he didn't waive the fee and he just said 'rules are rules'. On top of that, we had to leave before breakfast on the last day and the kitchen staff were reluctant to pack us any kind of breakfast. We had to go into the kitchen ourselves in the end, and then the young lady only gave us a piece of fruit each and then two plain slices of bread with a slice of cheese in between. From all the accommodations I stayed at during my three weeks in Brazil, this one was the biggest rip off. The property is nice, but there's no hospitality here. Choose somewhere else.

The place itself is stunning. The house has been furnished with such great attention to detail and touches that make you feel like you have a hilltop mansion all to yourself. Breakfast is superb, the pool area with trust bar is a fantastic place to hang out with an incredible view of Sugarloaf Mountain and Guanabara Bay. My room was next to the reception but there was no sound on either side. Perfectly private. What makes this place truly special is the people. We received a very warm welcome and felt like treasured guests throughout our stay. But after having my phone and wallet stolen (in a different part of Rio) during our stay, the team bent over backwards to help us, support us in dealing with the police and putting us at ease. I am so grateful for the kindness they showed.
