The view, the common areas. The location is a bit of a double edged sword, on the the one hand vidigal is a cool neighborhood, but on the other hand, it is a bit far from everything.

The location was great, especially the view. the bathrooms were big and clean. The common area is awesome.
The lockers were in very poor condition. Some of the staff were helpful but they also played loud music, left the kitchen kind of dirty and were high while working. Some of the staff were just really grumpy and not nice. One day I went out for breakfast and came back to the hostel around 9am. I rang the dooorbell and the girl was sleeping. So she got up to open the door for me and her face was just awful, like she hated me for waking her up. It made me feel unwanted there.

Well, location is amazing. It's walkable down to the main street to catch the public transportation to check out the spotlights of the city. If you feel tired to climb up the hill, you can take a motor taxi at the bottom of the mountain. There are supermarkets close by and you can use the kitchen, plus it's pretty safe, very nice view of the ocean. Staff is polite and the rooms are clean and quiet for sleeping. I highly recommend this experience and stay at this hostel. The favela is well-organized, my guess is that over there, it's safer than the fancy places in Rio.

As mentioned, the view is absolutely amazing. If you take the best dorm upstairs for US$8 a night, you wake up with a clear view to the sun rising over the ocean from your bed, and with AC. Rest of the dorms are very humid and warm at night with no ventilation or fans. Tried sleeping in the hammock on the main deck facing the ocean and it was great, although mozzies were annoying. You get what you pay for! Vollies were great and super accommodating, met some interesting people here.
